How To Select The Perfect Helmet?

  • Helmets should be chosen carefully, weighing the unique features and benefits of each model
  • Before choosing a helmet type, it's best to understand its construction, size
  • Features such as maximum safety, wide field of vision and comfort are key to any type of helmet

What Does a Motorcycle Helmet Consist Of?

Every helmet is made up of a number of components that are all equally important in providing safety, comfort and performance. The first component you can see is the shell, which can be made from a variety of materials, each with their own advantages. The purpose of the shell is to protect the head from penetration by external objects and to spread the impact over as large an area as possible.

The innermost layer with respect to the shell is EPS, expanded polystyrene, which is there to absorb the force of impacts. The density of the EPS is differentiated according to the area of the head that it has to protect, to optimize protection and lightness.

EPS is not an elastic material, by nature, so it doesn’t return to its original shape after compression following an impact. That means that it can no longer absorb impacts in the compressed area. That’s why a helmet that has cushioned an impact must be replaced.

The straps of the helmet are the parts of the helmet that are used to "fasten" the helmet. The straps should be fastened so that they do not fit too tightly around the throat, but at the same time should not be so loose that the helmet accidentally falls off. D-ring fasteners are one of the main – and best – types of helmet fasteners you’ll find on modern motorcycle helmets. They’re pretty low-tech but by using solid components that won’t break and masses of friction between them, they make for great helmet fasteners.

Choosing The Right Helmet Size

Helmet sizes range from XS to XXL on average, but some models are also available in XXS and XXXL. Each helmet size range alternates shell sizes to optimize the fit of the helmet to each individual's head.

The first step is to measure the head and check the circumference with a tape measure. The circumference must be measured with a tape measure placed horizontally at a height just above the eyebrows. Using the table provided by the manufacturer to find the appropriate size will give the correct measurement.

The second step is to try on the helmet, if you find that the helmet wobbles when you try it on, this is an indication that the helmet is too large for you and will pop out in the event of an accident. Wear the helmet for at least 10 - 15 minutes to see how it works. The straps should lock tight and open easily, but not loosely. Once locked, the helmet should not move or come off.

A motorcycle helmet should not be too tight either. If a helmet is too tight, some areas, such as the chin, may not be fully covered. A more common problem occurs when the helmet presses on the rider's forehead and temple. This issue can cause discomfort and become a distraction while riding.

Safety - The Primary Consideration When Choosing Helmet

Whichever helmet you ultimately decide on, there are a few very important common factors you need to be aware of - not least safety.

For regular cyclists, it's best to choose a helmet whose shell is made of composite or carbon fiber, and it's also best to choose a helmet with a variety of shell sizes so you can select the one that best fits your head.

For short and intermediate urban or touring use, thermoplastic resin helmets are certainly a good choice, especially for novice riders, or those not looking for lightweight or race performance.

Why Helmet Ventilation is Also Important?

The ventilation system is also the result of careful research, with intake and exhaust ports carefully positioned to expel heat and moisture.

It's not just a matter of comfort and breathability, as increased heat slows down reactions and affects the rider's perception. The ventilation system (in fact the entire helmet) should ideally be designed and developed in a wind tunnel. A more aerodynamic and fluidic shape improves rider comfort and reduces air resistance.
